You Are What You Eat?

9 12 2009

Photo 53rd graders are currently learning about food chemistry, how food works inside our bodies. We know we should eat 5 servings of grains, 4 servings of vegetables, 3 servings of fruit, 3 servings of milk, and 2 servings of meat every day. Do you follow these guidelines? What are your good eating habits? What are your bad eating habits? My worst habit is probably drinking too many sodas!

Female Great Thinkers?

1 10 2009

We have been learning about “Great Thinkers” in the history of our world. Albert Einstein was German, Leonardo DaVinci was Italian, and Walt Disney was American. Great Thinkers come from different places and have different ideas and talents to share. We can be great thinkers by using our 6 thinking hats and focusing on specific ideas for improvement. I would like to study at least one female great thinker in history. I have several ideas…Florence Nightingale, Mother Teresa, Harriet Tubman, Condoleeza Rice, etc. Can you think of a FEMALE who might be considered a great thinker? Tell me who you nominate and why!

Welcome Back! Let’s Blog!

21 08 2009

TexasWhat did you learn over the summer? Did you do something new? Visit an interesting place? I stayed in Texas this summer for the first time in several years. I was able to visit NASA/ The Space Center in Houston, attend Star Wars Jedi Boot Camp, visit the George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University, and have fun on a lake I had never been to before, Lake Conroe. We are lucky to live in Texas. There are so many opportunities here! We get frustrated because it is so hot during the summer, but it really is a fun place to live. What did you do this summer? Where is a place you enjoy visiting?

Are You Smarter than a GT Teacher?

20 02 2009

This math problem stumped me today. See if you can solve the problem and EXPLAIN your solution. FYI, the solution is NOT 16!!!

Four band members are wearing wigs. One wig is pink, one is black, one is purple, and one is blue. In how many different ways could the band members wear the wigs?

The Magic Gopher

6 02 2009

Mrs. Harle shared this website with us. It really scared Kirsten and I :-)

Why do you think this works? Think mathematically and out of the box!

Career Goals for the Future

1 12 2008

One of the things I try to do when choosing our GT activities is to make sure that we study information that will help us decide what we would like to be when we grow up. For instance, when 3rd grade studies food chemistry, some students may become interested in being a nutritionist or a doctor. When we create videos in the computer lab, students may become interested in a career in television or computers.

What do you plan to do after college? What careers interest you?

Impacting Others

17 10 2008

Other people can influence the way we think about the world. That is one reason why the upcoming presidential election is so important. 4th graders have been studying famous artists from long ago. While we may know some facts about McCain, Obama, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt, it is more important that we understand how they impact our own lives and our world.

Can you think of a person who makes a difference in your life? Someone who inspires you? How do they affect the way you think?

3rd and 4th grade Social Network

3 10 2008

If your parents gave me an email address last month, you will receive an invitation to join our EAGLE class Social Network. This is so cool- you can make your own website, with a page about yourself! You can also add pictures, music, and even start your own blog! I look forward to seeing who tries to make this happen! Remember, you are a LEADER! And leaders look towards the FUTURE! And our future is TECHNOLOGY!

Tucker Stumped Me!

I love it when my students “stump” me. Hence this brain teaser from Tucker:

What letter should take the place of the question mark, and why? Think & Blog!

How’s the Magic Show Coming?

12 09 2008

This week we started our Magic Show simulation. We are brainstorming ideas and gathering materials. Remember that your work will be evaluated based on the 4 core areas of GT: Leadership (are you able to work on task? bring your materials without reminders? speak in front of an audience?), Academics (will you teach us something based on science?), Art (are you making a costume? props?), and Creativity (will your show incorporate music? drama? humor?).

I hope you all enjoy this project. We will do most of the work at school…but remember to bring items as needed!

Has anyone ever been to a “REAL” magic show? What do you remember?
